I am a Pack Rat. I Collect......

..........lots of things. Lots.

I inherited the gene from my mother. She is having a Garage Sale this weekend, and I have been commandeered to help. I may end up buying more than I help to sell. My Mom is the Queen of Collecting, and has amassed quite a few treasures over the years, many of which have managed to make their way into my house. Ahem. They found their way over here all on their own. I swear.

My Mom has collected mercury glass, vintage cake stands (and this was WAY before Martha started knocking them off), Ironstone pottery, Celluloid boxes, Victorian shell boxes, Hotel silver, fine silver, Polish and German pottery, books, contemporary art, antiques, twig furniture.....the list goes on.

As I said, I did inherit that gene, much to my husband's dismay at times. He refers to us as "Kangaroo and Kangaroo", a reference to a children's book about two Kangaroos that collect so much they can't fit into their houses anymore. They have a sale and get rid of everything, then start all over. ( I was just trying to find a copy on Amazon to show you all, and all I came up with was a book no longer available, but worth $300!....see, it does pay to hold onto stuff! Now where did I put that thing? My husband is gonna croak when I tell him.)

Anyway.... as I was saying...I do love to collect. I have been collecting hotel and restaurant ware and thought I'd show you a couple of pieces (above...a jelly bowl and syrup pitcher). What I like about hotel ware is that it is not so precious it can't be used. We use ours with abandon...almost every time we have pancakes.

So....I'm curious. What do you collect and do you use your collected pieces? Or just love looking at them? I have a bit of both sorts. Please spill!

Now, where did I put that book?

Katie, this is so funny! I did a post yesterday on childhood and current collecting. Read here:
http://parishotelboutique.blogspot.com/2008/07/flashback-childhood-collections.html

I currently collect hotel silver, hotel china, small collection of French crowns, Italian art glass decanters, portrait paintings, old San Francisco painting. Eeks!

Oh, and I'm having a Summer giveaway on my blog, so you may want to add your name to win some more to add to your collection(s)!

Good Katie,
You sound like you are much better. It also sounds like I would love snooping through your mom's collection. Silver (plate/sterling/mnercury) is a big attraction for me as well as ironstone and transferware. But small onyx lamps and gilt mirrors are my downfall. I don't have room for anymore but that doesn't seem to stop me. Did you find the book yet?

For some odd reason, I guess I am collecting bird figurines or anything in that nature. I am not a collector but I guess I just accidently fell into bird collecting recently! LOL

Legos. Oh, wait, that's not me. Recently started collecting creamware, but vowed not to do it on-line so it is a slow growing collection. Considering its cost, this is good. And Redwing or Rumrill pitchers, brown glaze out, turquoise glaze in. How many could there be? That's what I thought and I'm up to twelve. I adore them and they are cheap.

And now I want the kangaroo book. Glad you are feeling better.

Lots and lots of vintage china, but I do use it for dinner parties. Also, vases, vintage children's books, cake stands, table linens, Weller Woodland pottery, and I have an amazing collection of old postcards of people and their dogs. All of which I love and add to often.

Books, cocktail shakers, things art deco, more books... And yes, almost everything gets regular use.

Where does your mother live? I really, really want to go to that garage sale -- her collection sounds fantastic! You should do a web sale so those of us who would really appreciate such treasures would have a chance to buy stuff! (Like minded types would probably pay more, too..)

Personally, I have a small collection of beautiful old cigar boxes, blue glass and blue pottery, white linens, pretty dishtowels and lots and lots of books. Actually, I hoard books. It's getting ridiculous.

I had to smile when I read your title because I'm a TOTAL pack rat too!! Been working at not being SO much of a pack rat. I collect books, Blenko glass, Fireking glass, teacups that don't match, lustreware, designer bags, clothing, Blythe Dolls, Hello Kitty items, fabric, mercury glass, vintage ornaments and MORE!! Oh and Chairs :) I use some of them and display other things.

Katie -- love hearing more about all the wonderful stuff your mom has collected. Sounds so classic and useful. Those are the pieces I get most excited about. Today I filled my big ceramic elephant with daisies for my tween niece's party; a few months ago it held balloons for a 4 year old and every day I enjoy looking at it. Glassware and barware is probably the most fun and versatile.

I used to collect tons of things, but then I got rid of everything when I moved to Wales. Now that I am back, I've really pared down my collections:
* Copper cookware. Down to the really good set my parents brought me back from France about 10 years ago.
* Cashmere sweaters. One in almost every shade of the rainbow... 40+ and counting. There's nothing like cashmere in our cold winters.
* Books. What can I say? It's genetic. My father had more than 4,000 books at one time.
* I've been collecting silver, because I was given the basis for a nice collection.

Love your list. Celluloid boxes and Mercury Glass - yum!

The most pathologically-driven collection we have is vintage Anchor Hocking Fire King Jadeite dinnerware. Hundreds of pieces (and counting). We use a fraction of the collection on a regular basis - I should put the lot of it on some sort of rotation schedule.

Wow! It feels great to be in such good collector company! You all sound like you have as big a bug as I do!

Joni...I think you win! But there are some fascinating things being collected out there. PVE, I love that you collect ink bottles! It is so fun to see the personalities emerge for each of you! Alkemie and chairs, Pigtown and books.

Thank you all for sharing. It's really fun to know more about each of you. :)

I wish I was a better "collector"! We have bought line drawings of places we visit, we have tons of old books, and I have a small accidental collection or two but that is it. I'm a pathetic collector I guess. Love all the stuff you collect! I need to start some sort of collection, it looks fun.

Fun post, Katie!
