Michael S. Smith.....the name alone conjures thoughts of design mastery....top designer lists....high style and designer brands. Michael S. Smith has "It"! Mr. Smith is the subject of previous interior design books bearing his name: Michael S. Smith Elements of Style with Diane Dorrans Saeks and Michael S. Smith Houses with Christine Pittel, both for Rizzoli. Both are in my library.

I was thrilled to receive an advance copy of his latest book: Michael S. Smith Kitchens and Baths! One of the largest segments of my own design business is the remodeling of Kitchen and Baths. I am always on the lookout for inspiration. Michael provides it in spades with this new book! Page after page of beautiful photography, stylish and functional spaces, and lots of resource information.

The book is organized by house project into chapters based on location rather than style. Because, as Michael says, "....it turns out that most rooms are rather hard to define in a word or two...just like most people." And so it is.
There is a section for the Beach, Town, and Country, as well as a section for Resources. It is a great way to see how different styles can take on a sense of place. How a modern kitchen or a traditional one feels "right" at the beach or in the city.
Michael gives really in depth descriptions of the spaces and information about all of the finishes, and why they were chosen. He describes how the layouts were changed and why. The Kitchen and Bath are functional spaces first and foremost, but Michael also believes that they should provide comfort.
Not only are there scads of fabulously designed kitchens and baths in this book, but also breakfast and dining spaces that often times are part of what has become one of the most used entertaining spaces in the home. Kitchens have become a place where people congregate and share in the preparation of meals or share a glass of wine while the hosts set out nibbles for guests and get things ready.
Michael S. Smith understands this and Kitchens have become one of his most favorite rooms in the house to design.
And what about Bathrooms? They are a place to relax and rejuvenate. A private space that should be a pleasure. This means it must function properly and also be easy on the eyes. There are loads of beautiful examples here, from stunning Master Bathrooms to jewelry box Powder Rooms.
There is huge variety in Michael S. Smith designs which is what I like to see in any design book. Many designers are masters in a particular style, but Michael S. Smith shows us here, he has mastered them all. What runs through his work is design excellence through his unique use of materials and details, and an adherence to timeless beauty rather than trends. I think his work will be just as appealing and fresh 20 years from now as they are today.
This will be a book that I will be referencing for years to come.

I would love to win his book...would love to get the detailed breakdown of his beautiful style like you describe. That first bathroom is really divine! I am already a follower but will like rizzoli on facebook...
I recently found your blog and have been happily poking around. There are so many interior design books out there and I've become particular about falling in love with too many. This one is a keeper. There's not one cookie cutter room in the whole lot and your could look at the spaces a hundred times and still find something fresh. Thanks for bringing to our attention.
I've always loved his barrel vaulted ceiling in his own kitchen- would love to see his other designs!
Would love to have this book in my design library.
I dream of a bathroom of simple design with beautiful white/gray marble everywhere and elegant fixtures.
I am now a fb fan and already a blog follower and love this book! Turquoise floors in the kitchen would be my favorite!

What a great addition to anyone's design library (especially to mine!) I now 'like' Rizzoli and 'follow' Katiedid, so maybe I will be the lucky winner!
In my dream kitchen, we would have honed limestone instead of polished granite countertops, ebonized wood cabinets (maybe the contemporary ones by William Ohs...) instead of cherry wood cabinets, and wide plank walnut wood floors (maybe from Exquisite Surfaces...) instead of oak floors.
It never hurts to dream!
Would love a bathroom that is bigger, with tons of natural light and with a fabulous master closet attached. Need this book!
I own Michael Smith's two previous books and would love to add this one to my design library!
I just "liked" Rizzoli and am a follower of your blog. I am dreaming of a new master bathroom and need LOTS of inspiration. It is in a dreary state and waiting for help... Thank you for the wonderful give away!
Almost certainly there are some rooms by my friend and fellow architect Oscar Shamamian of the NYC firm Ferguson & Shamamian. The collaborations of the two offices always seem to produce great work!
I would love a copy of this book, what a fantastic giveaway. Many thanks for sharing! Cynthia

Hopped on over to Rizzoli's FB page and "LIKED" them! Am a follower via GFC of your blog!
Michael Smith is one of my all-time fave decorators. This book should be as fabulous as his other two. I am hoping for great inspiration within the pages, as I have 2 bathrooms just BEGGING for updates!
The bath tub by the window caught my attention. It's one of my favorite place to unwind.
Woah, that first photo is completely awesome! It's getting me through my bones… It would be lovely to take a bath in that tub and see that cool view from the huge window. You have to make sure nobody else sees you though.
